Grand Slam of Darts Draw & Predictions
Well the GSOD draw came out this evening. Doesn't really have me insisting this is a must watch compared to a few years ago. The BDO dying out has not helped with this. But here's is my view on the draw & predictions.
Group A
Michael Van Gerwen, Joe Cullen, Gabriel Clemens, Adam Hunt
MVG will have no trouble getting out of this group even if he is not performing to his full ability. Joe Cullen flatters to deceive on TV & Clemens hasn't got a solid game on TV (He will). Adam Hunt is the outsider but I cant see him troubling the top two.
Prediction: MVG & Cullen to go through
Group B
Gary Anderson, Simon Whitlock, Ryan Searle, Adam Gawlas
Anderson seems to be struggling with an injury & this will play on thr outcome of the group and 2 of this group will take full advantage and Ando will crash out. Whitlock isnt playing badly and Searle looks rock solid on TV. Gawlas is an up and coming talent and this will be a great experience for him, dont expect him to win a match
Prediction: Whitlock & Searle to go through
Group C
Michael Smith, Krzysztof Ratajski, José de Sousa, Lisa Ashton
This can be a corker of the group. Smith could walk the group or go out with a bit of a whimper. Ratajski on the PDC Main Stage has done very little he needs to deliver, De Sousa needs more TV time but has the floor ability. I fancy him to deliver. Lisa is awesome but will be competitive but ultimately fail to win a match.
Prediction: Smith & De Sousa to go through
Group D
Rob Cross, Dave Chisnall, Luke Humphries, Justin Pipe
Cross has a few problems and is in a group which could be described as easier then others within the competition. Chizzy blows hot and cold, Humphries hasn't had a great year and Pipe isn't even the player of 10 years ago and will be making the numbers up.
Prediction: Cross & Chisnall to go through
Group E
Peter Wright, Ian White, Devon Petersen, Dirk van Duijvenbode
Wright will storm the group. The other 3 on paper have had good seasons but their is a hint of loss of form for all of them and its a toss up between them to see who will get 2nd place. This isnt as good a group as people will think
Prediction: Wright & Petersen to go through
Group F
James Wade, Glen Durrant, Jermaine Wattimena, Damon Heta
Wade will do a wading in this group and Duzza will do a duzza. Both will go through as their opponents are too inconsistent despite Durrant's loss of form over the last few weeks.
Prediction: Wade & Durrant to go through
Group G
Gerwyn Price, Johnny Clayton, Ryan Joyce, Mikuru Suzuki
You can't see Price not qualifying from this group, he is playing well and this will show in the group. Clayton is doing well too and is favourite for 2nd, Joyce is an experienced players who has beaten some big names, Suzuki will get more experience from this and will be competitive but lack of match practise will cost her.
Prediction: Price & Clayton to go through
Group H
Nathan Aspinall, Dimitri Van Den Bergh, Wayne Warren, Ricky Evans
Aspinall and Dancing Dimi should be favourites to go through this group. Warren hasn't played since March and it will show. As the last ever BDO World Champion he should try and avoid losing all 3 games Evans is fast but inconsistent and will not get through this group for this reason
Prediction: Aspinall & DVDB to go through
All in all this will be a good event, Will not have the feel of GSOD's from yesteryear but again that's irrelevant. Hopefully in the future their will be more WDF/MAD/UKDA players involved (I suspect they will).
10 years tomorrow will be Hankey 5-4 Taylor.... What a game, What a build up, What a tournament
